Parks & Facilities Assistant (Part-time)
This is a part-time seasonal position that reports to the Superintendent of Parks Facilities and the Parks & Facilities Supervisor. The Parks & Facilities Assistant is responsible for the overall maintenance of buildings and grounds, with all activities designed to provide clean, safe, high-quality parks and facilities.
Individuals must be positive, organized, have an excellent work ethic, and be able to effectively complete a wide range of projects and tasks assigned by a supervisor. Applicants must have the ability to follow directions, be a team player, work on solo or group projects, and have good customer service and communication skills.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS, & RESPONSIBILITIES
- High school diploma or equivalent education preferred (not required).
- A valid Illinois driver’s license is required
- 1-2 years of experience in park maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, and/or related field, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. (preferred but not required).
- Basic knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, painting, and horticulture.
- Individual must have the ability to work independently and cooperatively in day-to-day operations with general direction from the Superintendent of Parks Facilities.
- Willingness to work evening and weekend hours is required.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned
Essential Functions
- Perform park checks, playground repairs, and general maintenance on park amenities like picnic tables, shelters, courts, and ponds
- Perform general building maintenance and upkeep.
- Operate motorized equipment and machinery, including mowers and tractors, in a safe and proper manner.
- Execute maintenance plans with colleagues and supervisors.
- Maintain desired weekly, monthly, and annual reports and inspections as required.
- Attend staff meetings as necessary.
- Knowledge and follow through of all policies and procedures.
Marginal Functions
- Perform the job in compliance with park policies, procedures, work rules, and employee manuals.
- Work around the general population and park patrons in public areas.
- Adhere to department dress code and maintain a positive public appearance.
- Attend workshops, webinars, and trainings as they pertain to the position.
- Must be good at problem solving and continually develop creative responses to problems.
- Must perform manual labor tasks that require lifting 50 pounds unassisted and walking, bending, stooping, standing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, reaching, lifting, pulling and/or pushing, grasping, and carrying.
Considerations
- Exposure to various weather conditions when working outside or assisting with outdoor functions.
- Must have the ability to read, write, and organize materials; must use good safety awareness and judgment
The starting pay range for this position is $16-$18 DOQ. The hours vary from 7:00am-3:00pm or 10:00am-6:00pm (30 hrs./week or no more than 37.5 hours per week)
